How is the Latin name for the Daffodil related to Greek Mythology?? + Art and Music
Dear Reader,
Last week I told you that the flower for the month of March was a Daffodil. If you didn’t see that email you can read it again here. But I want to give you some of the background of Daffodils and where there name comes from in this weeks email.
Daffodils are part of the Narcissus family which is a species of Amaryllis. Flowers are commonly white or yellow but some of them could be orange or even pink!
But don’t eat them because they contain alkaloids which are toxic! But it has been used to develop a medicine that treats Alzheimer's disease.
The Latin name narcissus is associated with Greek narkē "numbness", related to narcotic, because of the sedative effect of the alkaloids in the plant.
You may know the story of Narcissus who fell in love with his own beautiful reflection in the pool. He was unable to leave it and died from the disappointment of his love not being able to be returned. From this, we get the word Narcissistic which is to have an excessive love of yourself.
Some people suggest that the narcissi, or daffodil, bending downwards on its stem and often growing near streams represents the young Narcissus admiring his reflection.

Are you enjoying the warmer weather? I sure am! I realized today how much I miss flowers. Usually, around this time I would be in the greenhouse seeding them but my sister is planting the seeds while I’m still at school.
This week she seeded snapdragons, celosia, and carnations. There will be an abundance of flowers this year starting in late June. Which flowers are you looking forward to the most?

At my school we like to sing together so we have a group of students that get together and memorize songs. This week we learned a song called Country Life.
It’s a very lively folk song with reference to the simple pleasure of rising early and listening to the birds. Here are the lyrics but you should listen to this version of the song played by Eliza Carthy and Saul Rose.
