Have you checked your grass recently? What this means for your flower share…

Hello Farm members,

How is your lawn doing Reader?

Ours is pretty crunchy. We don’t have the luxury of watering the grass. Maybe you do or maybe you have gotten more rain than us this summer.

Well, the crops are getting crunchy and dried out too.

There hasn’t been a big soaking rain here since early in July. Since we need about 1” of rain a week for the plants to be healthy that means that there are a lot of sad flowers.

So you may have noticed that your bouquet this week is a little smaller than it has been in other weeks. Still beautiful, but smaller.

It’s frustrating to not be able to give you the big bouquets that you deserve but the weather is one of the things that I can’t DO anything about.

Yes, I do have irrigation in the fields to water the flowers when it doesn’t rain. But the same well that supplies our home, and all the vegetable crops ALSO has to water my flowers. It just isn’t enough.

The plants that have been producing so well all summer are tired and my next planting is short and small.

I want to share all this with you because as flower share members you have a share in what I can produce. When it’s beautiful and abundant and when it is less than perfect.

That’s why I appreciate your support so much.

Because farming isn’t easy.

When things go wrong I know that I will have a lifeline of support to fall back on.

As the next few weeks progress, I’ll have a better idea of what flowers I’ll have for the rest of the fall.

I’ll keep you posted.

But in the meantime, pray for rain.

Your flower farmer,

Annika

Hello Reader, Remember my email from last week when I announced the U-pick garden coming this summer? In this email, I’ll tell you how it works and how you can get a free bouquet. 1.Get your container at the front counter When you go to the store you can ask for a u-pick container at the front desk and punch your punch card (more on that below) or pay for the container. You can also borrow a pair of clippers to pick the flowers with. Then you take your container filled with water to the...

Hi Reader, I’ve been making bouquets for several years now and whenever I tell people what I do they always say: “Wow you’re so lucky!” And I know you aren’t thinking of weeding or the 95 degree days in July… you are imagining picking flowers in a sundress. I’m not going to lie, the best part of working with flowers is picking them in the cool morning while the sun rises. I’ve offered U-pick flower events annually, and everyone has loved them. So I have an exciting announcement to make!...

Remember me Reader? You may not even remember my name or how you signed up for my email list since I haven’t sent an email in over a year! I think the best thing is to reintroduce myself, explain where I’ve been and then you can decide if you’d like to keep hearing from me or not. I’m Annika DeMaster of Willow Haven Flowers which I started in 2019 as a summer job to make some money for my college education. I spent five summers growing flowers, making bouquets and running a business. I had a...
